2020 inspiration: originally a massive failure, and based on a story with exact origins unknown, Swan Lake is now one of the world's most celebrated ballets - a near 150 years after its premiere. Take from that what you will.
The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre bring their iconic touring production of the epic 4-act ballet to local shores, following sold out seasons in London, Paris and Sydney. With the role of Odette danced by Prima Ballerina Irina Kolesnikova, and Tchaikovsky's immortal score played as live accompaniment provided by The Cape Philharmonic orchestra and The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, this theatrical phenomenon is bound to be an absolute treat for lovers of dance and classical music alike.
The founding director of the St Petersburg Ballet, Konstantin Tachkin, says “I am constantly delighted and encouraged when I see more and more people – young and old – coming to our performances. From London’s Coliseum Theatre to the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, and from Hong Kong to Sydney, our unequalled Russian art performs to full houses and standing ovations. I guarantee our performances here in South Africa will long be remembered”.
