Remember that time you went to Cavendish Square to go and buy someone a gift from Lush (and you bumped into your neighbour, Margret, who was there returning items she'd impulse bought on the Woolworths sale), and you both exclaimed "what a coincidence!" and then decided to go for brunch together? That's basically the storyline of Sondheim's Into The Woods. Ok, not quite - but something like that.

In a number called "Act 1 Opening, Part 1" (10 points for creativity - the song's much more exciting than it's name), we find out what exactly makes the life of a fairy-tale character so miserable. Cinderella really wants to go to the King's festival, Jack is just longing for his cow to give some milk, and The Baker and His Wife want more than anything to have a child.

Also there's a witch who's pretty miffed about that one time a pregnant woman was lusting over the crops in her veggie garden. Needless to say, the characters are all drawn Into The Woods to fulfill their dreams, and all their adventures begin to intertwine into a big dramatic story where they discover that their actions have consequences they weren't quite anticipating.

Directed by Steven Stead for Kickstart, Into The Woods is bought to life by the same brilliant minds behind Sweeney Todd. The stellar cast and script of gold are proof that fairy-tales aren't just for kids. Tell your friend Margret, she'll want to watch it too.
